7 Days 6 Nights Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing-Mountain Trekking/Hiking Safari in Tanzania - Machame Route

The Machame route - the most popular route for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro) ascends the mountain from the Southern side. Machame Route is the route of choice amongst most climbers because it provides spectacular views and a variety of habitats. The route is also known as the "whiskey" route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, relative to the Marangu. While climbing Mount Kilimanjaro using the Machame route hikers encounter steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents.

The Machame Route climb can be done in a minimum of six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is most often tackled over seven days (six nights), for a better altitude acclimatization.

Kenya & Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Begin Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing safari and using the Machame Route to Machame Camp

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest

Our safari drive guide will drive you past village of Machame on the lower slopes of the mount Kilimanjaro. After completion of park entry formalities walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until we reach the Machame Camp. All meals dinner and overnight at the Machame Camp

Day 2: Mount Kilimanjaro climbing using the Marangu Route leave Machame Camp hiking to Shira Camp

Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Elevation (ft): 9,400ft to 12,500ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and ascend crossing valleys and ridges covered with heather past a river gorge for dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite.

Day 3: Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing using the Machame Route - Leave Shira Camp trekking/hiking to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation (ft): 12,500ft to 13,000ft
Distance: 15 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Semi Desert

From the Shira Plateau we keep trekking and hiking towards the peak of Kibo. At an altitude of 16,000ft we descend slightly to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight.

Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit attempt

Day 4: Machame Hiking Route Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari - Leave Barranco Camp for Karanga Camp

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. This is a short day meant for acclimatization.

Day 5: Continue with you Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Safari leaving Karanga Camp for Barafu Camp

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation (ft): 13,100ft to 15,300ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 6: Machame Trekking Route Mount Kilimanjaro Passage/Trek

Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Elevation (ft): 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), we continue our way to the summit. At 18,600 ft ABSL. you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). Continue trekking/hiking/climbing for 1-hour to reach the summit - Uhuru Peak.

After celebration and photography descend down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Day 7: Machame Climb Route Mount Kilimanjaro Direction/Way

Mweka Camp to Moshi
Elevation (ft): 10,000ft to 5,400ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest

After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi

 

5 Days Mount Kenya Climbing Safari using Sirimoni Route - Mountain Hiking and climbing Safari in Kenya

The Sirimoni Route ascends Mount Kenya from the North-Western side of the mountain. The Sirimoni route is a more scenic route as it is located on the drier side of mount Kenya hence offers more open spaces and views and good walking chances. You will climb through a mountane forest and through a wide ridge that directs to the summit region of the mountain. Sirimoni route is located on the Nowrthwest side of the mountain near the Nanyuki town.

Kenya Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi - Nanyuki

The first day of your Mount Kenya Climbing safari will see you depart after breakfast from Nairobi to Nanyuki, a small town on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Full day acclimatizing at the base town of Nanyuki, dinner and overnight

Day 2: Sirimoni Route Mount Kenya Path/Passage

Leave Nanyuki and drive to the Sirimoni gate from here you will follow the track going uphill through the Mount Kenya forest opening up to heath land in 3 hrs of trekking. The track leads to Judmier camp at 3300m. Dinner and overnight at Judmier Camp.

Day 3: Sirimoni Route Mount Kenya Climbing Safaris - Depart Judmier camp and trek/hike/Climbing towards Shipton's Camp

Depart after breakfast for a 900m ascent following the track uphill and fork left at the juction. An hour from Judmier, the track will cross the Ontulili river. You will proceed along the contours on the right through the moorland and cross the Liki north. Proceed up the hill towards Mackinder's valley. There are breath taking views from the valley as it winds up to the summits. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the Shipton's Camp which is 4200m.

Day 4: Sirimoni Route Mount Kenya Trekking Safari - Depart Shipton's Camp climbing towards Old Moses Camp and on to Point Lenana (Mount Kenya's Peak)

You will depart the Shipton's Camp at 3am pre-dawn and make an attempt at the peaks and through the steep rocky quarry which runs through a clearing on the cliff. You will arrive at point Lenana at 6:30am having walked for 3hrs. After seeing the sunrise, you will walk downwards to the Shipton's camp for your breakfast and descend lower to Old Moses/Judmaier camp for your dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Descend Mount Kenya to Nanyuki and Drive back to Nairobi

You will have your breakfast and descend through the mount Kenya rainforest for 2 hrs and catch your transport vehicle for your trip back to Nairobi.

The Marangu route. also affectionately known as the "Coca-Cola route" is by far the most popular route for Mount Kilimanjaro climbing Safaris. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro using the Marangu route is the least expensive route and it is possible to get to Mount Kilimanjaro's peak in 5 days using the Marangu route. Acclimatization period is very minimal using this route.

Hut accommodation on the Marangu route forms one of the main differences, compared to the other routes. It offers you the relative luxury of being able to sleep in huts along the entire route. Mineral water, soft drinks, chocolates and beers are also sold at all the camps on this route.

Tanzania Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Begin Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing safari and using the Marangu Route to Mandara Hut

Marangu Gate (1980m) - Mandara hut (2700m), Hiking time: 5h, Distance: Approximately 12kms, Habitat: Montane forest

Drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate passing through the village of Marangu, which is located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro for park entry formalities. Leave the Park gate and ascend through the rain forest, where most of Kilimanjaro's animals are found - trekking/climbing/hiking continues till we reach Manda hut where we will spend the rest of the day, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Mount Kilimanjaro climbing using the Marangu Route leave Mandara hut (2700m) and proceed to Horombo hut (3720m)

Hiking time: 6h, Distance: Approximately 15kms Habitat: Moorland

From Mandara begin trekking/walking/hiking/climbing through a short stretch of forest, then skirts the base of the Maundi Crater where you will have your first really impressive view of the Kibo Crater.

On the open moorland you will see some of Kilimanjaro's most spectacular plants - the endemic giant lobelia which grows up to 3 m in height and the giant groundsel (Senecia Kilimanjari), which can reach heights of 5m! After about 6 hours from here you reach the Horombo hut, where you will have hot washing water, rest; an evening meal and overnight.

Day 3: Marangu Route Mt Kilimanjaro Track/Passage Horombo hut (3720m) - acclimatization day

Horombo hut is a village of huts perched on a small plateau, Horombo is normally bustling with hikers, guides and porters, with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatization. A hike towards the Mawenzi hut, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (about 3 hours up and 1,5 hours down), is strongly recommended. This hike will further assist with the process of acclimatization. All meals dinner and overnight at the Horombo huts.

Day 4: Continue with Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing/Hiking/Trekking Safari along the Maranu Route - Leave Horombo hut (3720m) for Kibo hut (4700m)

Hiking time: 6h
Distance: Approximately 15kms
Habitat: Alpine desert

Continue with your mountain climbing safari heading for Mount Kilimanjaro's summit through alpine desert habitat.Our guide will advise you accordingly.

Go to bed at round about 1900hrs and try to get as much rest and sleep as possible before making a summit attempt in the next day.

Day 5: (Summit Attempt) Kibo hut (4700m) - Uhuru Peak (5895m) - Horombo hut (3720m)

Hiking time: 8h to Uhuru, 6h to get to Horombo
Distance: Approximately 6kms ascent, 21kms descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

To attempt climbing to MountKilimanjaro's summit you will rise around 23h30, and after some tea and biscuits you shuffle off into the night, and this is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman's point (5 681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort. This is probably the most demanding section of the entire route.

Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend, taking photographs, before the 3 hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest you gather all your gear you left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for your overnight. Later in the evening enjoy your last dinner (with soft drinks and beer for sale at the camp office). dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Horombo hut to Marangu Gate

Horombo hut (3720m) - Marangu Gate (1980m)
Hiking time: 6h
Distance: Approximately 27kms

After breakfast you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman's Point (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m), receive gold certificates. You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations!! Overnight at the your pre-booked hotel.

Kenya Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi - Naro Moru Route Mount Kenya Climbing Path

The first day of your Mount Kenya Climbing safari will see you depart after breakfast from Nairobi to Naro Moru, a small town on the slopes of Mount Kenya. You will spend the day at the base of Mount Kenya before your climbing mountain safari for acclimatization

Day 2: Naro Moru Route Mount Kenya Trail/Course

Drive to the Mount Kenya park gate at Naro Moru and make a hike of 9km within 4 hrs. You will spend the rest of the day at leisure while gradually acclimatizing. Dinner and over night at the met station hut about 3,000 m above sea level.

Day 3: Naro Moru Route Mount Kenya Road/ Hike

Hike up after breakfast up the Taleki valley getting to Mackinder's camp where you can see the main peaks clearly. This trek is about five hours. You will enjoy your meals and overnight at the Mackinder's hut at an altitude of 4,200m.

Day 4: Naro Moru Route Mt Kenya Track/Direction

You will start a pre-dawn climb to Point Lenana. Your chances to tackle the summit are increased when you start early and also avoid the bad weather from early afternoon. The Pt. Lenana is at 4,985m above sea level. You will later climb down to Mackinder's camp for dinner and overnight having successfully conquered your Mount Kenya mountain climbing adventure safari.

Day 5 Naro Moru Route Mt Kenya Way/Passage

Have breakfast and then descend to the met station and onwards to the Naro Moru park gate in about 4 hrs time. You will then drive to Naro Moru town for lunch and depart for Nairobi arriving late afternoon. This is the end of your Mt. Kenya Climbing vacation safari.
